Dog Training Without The Dogs
Unit 1: What works better – the carrot or the stick?
Unit 2: Is it cupboard love?
Unit 3: Which hoop to jump through?
Unit 4: What problem?
Dog Training Without the Dogs uses slides, video demonstrations and discussion to lead us through an understanding of the dog’s mind and how the training relationship works.
Unit 1: What works better – the carrot or the stick? looks at learning, reinforcement and punishment, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, the four quadrants and what all of this means in the context of training our dog.
For a taster see: https://www.thedoginme.co.uk/dog-behaviour/the-4-quadrants-of-dog-training/
Unit 2: Is it cupboard love? explores the canine-human bond. We will look at the history and process of domestication and how this animal has managed to share our life, in our homes and oftentimes, in our beds.
Unit 3: Which hoop to jump through? follows on and investigates the ‘how to’ of dog training. This unit considers the common procedures used to train such as lure and reward, capture and, shaping.
Unit 4: What problem? puts it all together. Week 4 will develop a road map for training success. This final unit also takes a more in depth peek at canine behaviour and outlines how to prevent things going wrong. The more common behaviour problems, such as separation anxiety, house soiling, leash reactivity and resource guarding are touched on with a brief synopsis for prevention and management.
Dog Training Without The Dogs aims to cover those areas that are difficult to access within a training class, online or even from a book. Alongside teaching some basic fundamentals about dogs and dog training, discussion and questions form an essential part of each class. Owning a dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. The dog has the ability to be a comforter, a reason to exercise and a non-judgement chat buddy. Watching your dog play is joyful. Spending time out and about with your dog or even just watching tele with them is companionable. Hearing your dog bark at a door knock is reassuring. All these things (and more) define the human – canine bond and if your dog could talk he would say: “my time here is short – let’s spend it with understanding’.

The course is structured to teach the principles of dog training and behaviour. Each unit introduces new topics and the units build on each other to secure a final knowledge of understanding how your dog learns and how to strengthen the bond with your dog.
- Unit 1 (What works better – the carrot or the stick?) will introduce canine learning and
reward-based training - Unit 2 (Is it cupboard love?) will focus on the canine-human bond and why it is important
- Unit 3 (Which hoop to jump through?) will demonstrate lure and reward training, capture training and shaping
- Unit 4 (What problem?) will bring it all together and concentrate on how to
prevent some common problems
There is a theoretical and practical homework with each unit.
Yes, Dog Training Without The Dogs slides will be made available to all attendees via email. Taking notes is encouraged.
Unfortunately not. The units in Dog Training Without The Dogs depend on the learner having been to each session. This is because it is likely that something may be covered in unit 3 that depends on knowledge from unit 2.
